The question “is it cheaper to keep the heating on” is one of those questions that we hear quite often.
There’s been a school of thought kicking around for some time that leaving your heating on all the time actually saves money on fuel bills.
Crazy though the idea sounds there is some logic behind the idea. The logic is simple that once your house it up to temperature it costs less to keep it at the same temperature than it does to keep heating your home every time from cold.
However this idea is very much a myth. It isn’t cheaper to keep your heating on, it’s cheaper to set the timer or better still control your heating remotely with something like a Worcester Wave Smart Thermostat
The cheaper way to heat your home.
The reason why setting your timer and or using a smart thermostat is cheaper than leaving your heating on is all to do with how your home loses heat rather than how you heat the house in the first place.
The way it works is simple. Your house no matter how well insulated it is will always lose heat if it’s colder outside than inside. The colder the outside temperature is compared to the inside, the quicker your house lose heat. Even with the very best insulated homes heat loss still occurs.
Although heating your house from cold each time takes a while the fact that you aren’t losing heat throughout the day and night saves money.
One of the keys to good energy efficiency is good insulation, the better your house is insulated the slower you lose heat. All that said no matter how well insulated your house is, it will always lose heat as long as it’s colder outside.
Add to good insulation, an energy efficient boiler, a smart thermostat, thermostatically controlled radiator valves and of course the cheapest fuel tariff you can find. Then you’ll be well on your way to cheaper heating costs.
